SERVE: K-12 students that have been identified as having a disability under the guidelines of “The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.”
INDIRECT: The student is in the general education classroom. The special education teacher monitors progress weekly by communicating with the general education teachers. This service is provided when a student is transitioning from special education to the general education classroom. If the student is successful in this transition, they are dismissed from special education.
CO-TEACHING: The student is in the general education literacy or English and/or math class. The special education teacher is in the classroom along with the general education teacher. The teachers plan and teach classes together. The special education teacher is responsible for making sure that the student understands the instruction and that all students complete all assignments.
RESOURCE: The student is actually pulled out of the general education classroom for literacy or English and/or math services. The services are provided to supplement the instruction in the general education classroom not to replace the instruction. The classroom size is limited to 8 students at a time.
SELF-CONTAINED: The student will be provided math, literacy or English, science, and social studies in a special education classroom. Depending on the ability of the student they could remain in this classroom all day or may attend some general education classes. The district has one classroom that is limited to 10 students due to the severity of the disabilities and 3 classrooms that are limited to 15 students. They do attend P.E., art, counseling, computer classes, music, lunch, recess, etc. with a general education classroom if they are successful in transitioning to these activities. Each classroom is equipped with a refrigerator and microwave. Each building has access to a washer and dryer and the secondary students have access to a stove. This allows these students to be involved in daily living skills such as cooking and cleaning. This is provided to enable them to be as independent as their disability will allow them to be when they graduate from high school. All eligible students can participate in the Special Olympics.
THERAPY SERVICES: Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapy services are offered in every building if the student qualifies to receive these services.
HEARING SERVICES: The district contracts with an audiologist. They do monthly hearing evaluations to students that do not pass the school hearing screening. The audiologist also provides assistance with sound field classroom amplification systems. She also provides technical assistance regarding students who have hearing loss, hearing aids, cochlear implants, bone-anchored implants, and personal FM systems.
